Every great story starts with an idea — and La Liga’s began with one man’s vision. Back in 1928, a football enthusiast named José María Acha, who was a director at Arenas Club de Getxo, came up with a bold idea: a national football league for Spain where the best teams could compete regularly.
At the time, Spanish football was mostly made up of regional tournaments, but Acha believed the country needed something bigger — a competition that would bring all the top clubs together. His idea quickly gained support, and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) turned it into reality.
In 1929, the very first season of La Liga kicked off with just 10 teams, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, and Real Sociedad. Nobody knew it then, but that small start would grow into one of the most exciting and respected football leagues in the world.
